In these words, hand drawn in
black ink and swooping in and out of rolling patterns of dense black
lines, Albert Wendt begins his exciting new collection. The
Book of the Black Star boldly combines words and images in
short poems with extraordinary power which draw on Samoan language and
myth, and on dreams and memories, as well as on the daily life of the
poet, a grandfather and teacher at home in an Auckland suburb.
Wendt poured forth these rich
« imagetexts » during 2001,
suddenly finding the words took shape on the page and expanded into
drawings. They recall the worlds of tattoo, of
« siapa » (tapa) and of graffiti.
But they also in their density, complexity, variety and movement
perfectly express the central motif of the black star, a mysterious
force which drives the collection.
Long recognised as a major
writer, Albert Wendt is never predictable or complacent : he
reveals here as remarkable creative imagination which is both
distinctive and contemporary and deeply rooted in tradition and place.

Wendt was born in Tauese, Apia, Western Samoa, in 1939. Poet, novelist,
short-story writer, playwright, he is currently a Professor of English
specialising in New Zealand and Pacific Literatures and Creative
Writing at the University of Auckland. He has been an influential
figure in the developments that have shaped New Zealand and Pacific
literature since the 1970s and was made Companion of the Order of New
Zealand in 2001 for his services to literature. |

les cinquante poèmes de The
Book of the Black Star
(2002) proposent une forme d’expression littéraire
qui
associe l’écrit et l’image de
façon intime et
complémentaire, l’une ne pouvant être
interprétée sans le concours de
l’autre. Les
poèmes traitent de nombreuses thématiques telles
que la
puissance (et l’impuissance) de la langue et sa
capacité
de dire l’Histoire et des histoires samoanes, coloniales et
postcoloniales. (…) Cette collection de poèmes
peut
être (…) lue comme une quête de sens qui
s’apparente à une recherche identitaire et
même
spirituelle entreprise par un certain Sam, peut-être la
personnification ambiguë de Samoa en voie difficile
d’épanouissement (…).

L’ouvrage
dans son ensemble propose une lecture de la mythologie samoane
délestée du passé,
imbriquée dans le
présent des rues de la ville d’Auckland. Cette
conception
de la mythologie, comme pouvant constituer un des fondements de
l’identité contemporaine nationale et diasporique,
étaie une grande partie de l’œuvre de
Wendt.
