George Lewis (dit « Louis »)
Becke, né à Port Macquarie (Australie) en 1855
a, dès l'âge de quinze ans, pratiqué tous
les métiers imaginables d'un bord à l'autre du
Pacifique (Samoa, Marshall, Kiribati, Tuamotu, …) avant de
tenter de gagner sa vie en écrivant.
By reef and palm (1894) est le premier d'une longue série
de recueils qui restituent fidèlement les hauts et les
bas de la vie dans le Pacifique insulaire à la charnière
du XIXe et du XXe siècles, aux Samoa, aux Marquises et
aux Tuamotu, aux Fidji, en Micronésie (Gilbert, Ellice,
Marshall, Caroline).
La notoriété de
Louis Becke est trop étroitement circonscrite au monde
anglophone. La seule traduction française de “ By
reef and palms ” (Scènes de la vie polynésienne,
1903) est jugée “ fort médiocre ”
par le père O'Reilly 1 ; elle n'a jamais été

Alone, in the most solitary part
of the Eastern Pacific, midway between the earthquake-shaken
littoral of Chili and Peru, and the thousand palm-clad islets
of the Low Archipelago, lies an island of the days « when
the world was young. » By the lithe-limbed, soft-eyed
descendants of the forgotten and mysterious race that once quickened
the land, this lonely outlier of the isles of the Southern Seas
is called in their soft tongue Rapanui, or the Great Rapa.
