La nouvelle — short story — connait en Irlande un succès remarquable ; l'introduction de Declan Kiberd éclaire les raisons, autant de la vigueur du genre que de l'audience dont il bénéficie auprès des lecteurs.

La forme courte semble ainsi particulièrement adaptée au contexte d'une société où la tradition orale reste vigoureuse, mais se heurte — dans une rencontre stimulante — à la montée en puissance d'autres mode d'expression, en l'occurence la littérature écrite.

Développant ensuite un argument avancé par Sean O'Faolain, Declan Kiberd ajoute que la nouvelle, plus fluide que le roman, rend mieux compte des mouvements d'un monde en devenir : « if the novel chronicled a made society, the [short] story better captured one still in the making ».

Les quatre auteurs présentés ici illustrent les idées soutenues par Declan Kiberd ; tous sont originaires de l'ouest du pays et écrivent en gaélique, ce qui conforte l'argumentation. On notera, même atténué par le filtre de la traduction, le jeu persistant du bilinguisme qui, de longue date, rehausse la saveur de la littérature irlandaise : « the language of these versions is often like that of the countrymen and women who impressed the poet Yeats by their capacity to think still in Irish while using English words ».

Loin de tout repli identitaire ou de toute complaisance folklorisante, Micheál Ó Conghaile, Pádraic Breathnach, Dara Ó Conaola et Alan Titley s'appliquent à illustrer une tradition, pleinement exposée au cours et aux risques de la vie : « here (...) is a book which demonstrates that the example of Kafka has been fully assimilated (...). The mingled, gloriously impure nature of our world is well expressed in this most hybrid of literary forms ».
