Amasa Delano, American merchant and seafarer, published his Narrative
of three extraordinary trading voyages. This account, edited by his
descendant Eleanor Roosevelt Seagrages and supplemented with archival
illustrations and new maps, is a superbly readable chronicle of
American enterprise and adventure.

Amasa
Delano (1763-1823) was a descendant of the shipbuilding Delanos of
Duxbury, Massachusetts, a family that was engaged in Far Eastern trade
for several generations and whose members included forebears of
Franklin Delano Roosevelt. |

De
1789 à 1807 Amasa Delano a navigué au commerce
entre les
Etats-Unis et l'Extrême-Orient, traversant plusieurs fois le
Pacifique, l'océan Indien et l'Atlantique et abordant une
multitude d'îles 1
où, avec
curiosité et ouverture, il s'est plu à observer
les
populations et leurs modes de vie, la faune et la flore. Comme le
relève William T. La Moy dans son introduction, l'auteur est
l'un des premiers à rendre compte des interactions
culturelles
entre marins occidentaux et populations insulaires du Pacifique.
Ses
voyages incessants ont exposé le capitaine Delano
à
des rencontres déterminantes et à plusieurs
fortunes de
mer ou de terre. Ainsi, propose-t-il un éclairage original,
et
nouveau à son époque, sur plusieurs
épisodes de la
mutinerie de la Bounty :
journal du capitaine de la Pandora,
envoyée par l'Amirauté britannique pour
découvrir
et se saisir des mutins ; entretiens avec
Mayhew Folger, “ découvreur ” de la
colonie de Pitcairn
(cf. Ch. V).
Une
escale aux îles Juan Fernandez
est l'occasion de réflexions croisées sur
l'aventure
d'Alexander Selkirk et sur le traitement qu'en propose Daniel Defoe
dans “ Robinson Crusoe ”
(cf. Ch. XVII).
Herman
Melville fut un lecteur assidu des récits d'Amasa Delano. On
en trouve trace dans “ The
Encantadas, or Enchanted isles ”, suite de
dix esquisses
consacrées aux îles Galapagos et, surtout, dans “ Benito Cereno ”, nouvelle
construite à
partir d'une aventure mouvementée vécue par Amasa
Delano
aux abords de l'île Santa Maria en vue des côtes
chiliennes.
