MARY BOURKE : Hugh Lane […] was the most
important patron of the arts Ireland has ever had. He worked
day and night to instigate a great European modern art centre
in Dublin out of which the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art was
established. He gave numerous superb pictures to the National
Gallery of Ireland and he was also the first person to put
the spotlight on Irish artists by holding an exhibition of their
work in London.
